Blessings range from adding Em excesso heart containers and healing damage taken, to movement-enhancing power-ups such as a post-jump glide, and longer whip reach. Activating blessings costs more with each subsequent redemption, adding a compelling risk-reward element. While some treasure chests are easy to find, many are hidden away in areas requiring dextrous platforming skills to reach, or take precious time away from avoiding an in-pursuit guardian.
However, players who deploy it as a pass-the-controller experience at their next party will almost certainly get a lot out of it. This is an excellent game to play with a few friends after a drink or two, with everyone taking a run and passing the controls on when they either die or complete a level. It may help you tackle some vertical challenges, navigate tall rooms, and reach ceiling treasure chambers, but those rooms are few and far-between compared to the more "horizontal" challenges, and all of these can still be easily cleared with your whip and Phantom Abyss any of the movement blessings above.
This is a title devoted only to dungeon brawling, with hours and hours of killing and lots of levels to explore.
Phantom Abyss first dropped towards our eyes at the back end of 2022. At that time it was all about enjoying the Early Access / Game Preview vibes, much like the phenom that is Palworld is doing now. Phantom Abyss requested you to run a gauntlet though, as fast as you could. We descended into Phantom Abyss and quite enjoyed what was on offer.
Movement is the name of the game, and Whip Again can drastically extend your air time and vertical distance. With quick enough reflexes, should your first grapple fail to help you reach a safe platform, Whip Again can give you a second chance to avoid falling into the abyss.
My biggest gripes with this action platformer concern the temperamental physics, repetitive maps, and lengthy load times.
